Mammogram & health check – advice please
« on: October 13, 2014, 12:23:53 PM »
I’ve been reading this forum for a while and hope that someone will be able to give me some advice or information regarding how I should go about making an appointment for a mammogram and health check.  I’ve never been for either before in my life, therefore the process is all rather new to me.

Do I need to go through a local doctor to make an appointment at a hospital for a mammogram?  My nearest hospital is Lanciano.

As I am not yet retired, I have private medical insurance so costs will be covered.  I do have a health concern therefore I’m keen to go with the easiest and quickest option even if more expensive.

Are there such things as private hospitals in Abruzzo, where one can walk in and make an appointment?

Thanks.

Are you resident in Italy? Do you have a tessera sanitaria ( health card)?

As far as I'm aware you can either book an appointment at a private clinic, in which case you have to pay, or you can go to your doctor who will give you a prescription to go for the necessary tests to the local, hospital or any other hospital you choose . You will still have to pay the "ticket"  as far as I'm aware the costsof private clinics aren't an awful lot more than what you pay at the hospital and can be a lot quicker.

If you are worried it might be best to find a private clinic for speed, especially if your insurance is paying.

Thank you for your reply.

Yes, I am Resident and possess a Tessera sanitaria.

How would you go about finding a reputable private hospital?  Maybe someone on here has first-hand experience and can recommend one.  Otherwise, the Yellow Pages?

Here you will find a list of the centri diagnostici approved by Europassistance. (I can't give you any personal recommendation but this reference is likely to direct you to reliable and efficient facilities.)

http://assets.europassistance.it/documents/ElencoCentriDiagnosticiConvenzionati.pdf

However - if you are worried - I'd very much suggest you go and see your GP (any GP in your area if you are not registered with one in particular). Firstly, you might find that you are reassured, and then you can simply book a mammogram and join a not very long queue - but if the doctor thinks it would be useful to make the request urgent then it can be fast-tracked by the surgery, even if it is a matter of referring you to one of the 'private' diagnostic centres.

I know two ladies, sisters, who have twice-a-year checks at a specialist breast clinic (in Pescara) because there is a long history of breast cancer in their family.  They went just last week for their most recent check.

If Levi can give you PM facilities, maybe I can give you a phone number to call one of these ladies.

Thanks for all your replies and information.  Good advice for me to go to a local doctor anyway so I will do that asap.

In my search I have come across this Health Services Charter for Abruzzo, which might be of use to others (I cannot find the 2014 edition): http://www.regione.abruzzo.it/portale/docs/cartaServiziSanitari/InFormaTi_inglese.pdf

I've also been reading about the dangers of mammograms - Wikipedia gives a good summary - so will consider all choices.

Grazie!
