Gran Sasso tunnel to close indefinitely
« on: May 13, 2019, 06:35:09 PM »

There are still urgent meetings with many groups trying to stop this happening because of the hugely detrimental effect it will have on the region.

Something we should all be aware of!

This sounds bad, but it also sounds a bit hysterical.
The 'nuclear' (scary word) research facility (which is being fingered here) is located deep below the Gran Sasso because it really needs to be there - (the mass of rock above it 'protects' the lab from bits of transient radiation which would contaminate its delicate work). The lab has a compelling reason to behave responsibly - it cannot move!
So (IMO) this is all an 'anti suing' reaction (remember the charges brought against the seismologists?). It's what happens when legals sniff some money. It's also about the over-simplification (and irresponsible populism) of the leaders of environmental causes.
I'll follow this story, and I truly hope that sense prevails.

If they do close it, there will be a really negative impact on Abruzzo. Many people live here and work in Rome but the alternative route will make it uneconomical to carry on. It?ll pose real difficulties for many here.

They (Transport Ministry, Strada dei Parchi, Sindaci and others) have come to their senses, and the tunnel is not going to be closed.

They want to do works to prevent the contamination of the water supply, so the tunnel will have only one lane open on each carriageway - so at busy times it will cause delays - but at least it isn't closing

From 20 May, the tunnel will be one lane and with a speed limit if 60 KPH. At least it?s still open!
