Fig tree pruning?
« on: May 27, 2016, 10:37:44 PM »
We've been here nearly a year and the garden is usable now BUT Fig trees are driving me mad. Nice to have some fruit, but not 50 kg of small crap figs 2 x a year. And the little soft branches keep coming back from the base of the trees, no matter how neatly or short i cut them. Did anyone try anything to stop the feckers from growing back? Any advice appreciated

You can't fight nature.  Fig trees grow like weeds here.  Best advice is to cut off everything that is too high to harvest from.... don't worry - whatever you do it won't kill the tree. And those little feckers - you just have to keep cutting them back.

Sounds like you have 'wild figs' no good whatsover so I'd chainsaw them to the base driill holes into stump and put some diesel into holes which should kill tree then replant with a 'proper' variety so you have lovely tasting figs but less of them!
