The Freedom Trail 2016
« on: February 07, 2016, 09:44:20 AM »
Now in its 16th year, the Freedom Trail from Sulmona to Casoli will take place over the three days of the April holiday weekend - Saturday the 23rd, Sunday the 24th and Monday the 25th of April.  This is a 60km walk which traces the route taken by the escaping prisoners of war, up and over the mountains, after the Armistice of September 8th, 1943. Split into 3 daily sections, it's not only a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the mountains in good company but also a way to honour the men who faced great danger as they fled from the Nazis.  Some of these men were hidden and protected by the Abruzzese, at great personal risk, and many others were captured and sent to other camps in Germany.  It's an important episode in our local history and one which unites the Abruzzesi and the countries who made up the Commonwealth and Allied forces.

If 3 days is too much for you, there are options to do just one or two stages with various overnight and transport options available.  Note that 'Campo 78' itself - which is just outside of Sulmona in Badia -  will be having an Open Day on the day before the march - Friday April 22nd - and you are welcome to attend.  Here is the link to the page on their website where you can sign up.  If you are coming, do please let us know.

I know we have mentioned it on the old site but worth a read: Love and War in the Apennines by Eric Newby is about this period.
