 Spotted one of these today, well OH dug it up...
 
 
 
 Not our picture as they were not really as good as this, but exactly the same. I'm guessing (from the web) it's a great crested newt. So apart from being a goodie, what's it doing in our veg plot, 500m from water?

Im  used to lizards drowning in the dogs water bowl and the other day I swooshed what I thought was a lizard but on closer inspection was a salamander!  It had disappeared by the time I got something to photograph it. Never seen one of those here before.

On the subject of Newts something that has always confused me is why they have such a reputation as heavy drinkers

Somewhere in the remaining vestiges of what used to pass for my brain before I fetched up in a country where wine was as cheap as chips I seem to remember that a 'newt' was a funeral directors attendant in the Victorian era that stayed in the house with the deceased as they were laid out in the parlour to receive visitors. Tradition had it that everyone who called brought or bought the 'newt' a drink so if someone was very well loved or simply famous they could get pretty sozzled.
